Throughout literature we find recurring tales of forthright people who are outspoken in condemning illegal practices only to be brought low themselves when they, or members of their families, commit such acts.

1. forthright (adj.) saying what you and think directly and honestly, without being afraid of other people's reactions

2. outspoken (adj.) an outspoken person states their opinion honestly, even if other people do not like it: forthright

    Example: an outspoken critic of government

    outspokenly (adv.), outspokeness (n.)

3. condemn [kənˋdɛm] (v.) to say publicly that you think someone or something is bad or wrong

    condemn sb for ( doing ) sth

    Example: He was widely condemned for his behavior after the match.

    strongly/ roundly condemn

    Example: The statement was roundly condemned by members of the opposition party.

    (v.) [ often passive ] to give a punishment to someone who has committed a crime

    Example: Fifty rebels were condemned to death.

    (v.) if something condemns you to an unpleasant situation, it forces you to experience it

    Example: Peacock's goal condemned United to their first defeat since March.

    (v.) to order something such as building or machine to be destroyed because it is not safe

    condemnation (n.), condemnatory (adj.)

Mr. Dorsey's inexorable campaign against the wrong-doers seemed to be paying off.

4. inexorable [ɪnˋɛksərəb!] (adj.) [ formal ] impossible to stop

    Example: the inexorable growth of multinational companies

    Example: Television detectives are inexorable in their pursuit of lawbreakers.

    inexorably (adv.)

“We may lose a football game,” the principal said, “but we can salvage our self-respect.” 

5. salvage  [ˋsælvɪdʒ] (v.) to save property or possessions from a building that has been damaged or destroyed in a fire, flood etc

    Example: Terrified residents tried desperately to salvage belongings from their devastated homes.

    (v.) to save or rescue a ship or the things it is carrying

    (v.) to succeed in achieving something in a situation or action that has been a failure

    Example: He had put a lot of effort into trying to salvage their relationship.

    salvage your pride ( = remain proud by achieving something despite many failures )

    Example: France salvaged some pride with a victory over Ireland in Paris.

    (n.) the action of saving property or possessions from being destroyed in a fire, flood etc

    Example: The salvage operation cannot begin for several months.

    (n.) property that has been saved form being damaged or destroyed
