My buddy Verne, a precocious automotive wizard, and I were inspired to do some inventing on our own.

1. precocious (adj.) a precocious child is more intelligent or behaves in a more developed way than you expect for their age

    Example: The child in Shadespeare's plays are so precocious that they all sound like grandparents.

    precociously (adv.), precociousness (n.), precocity (n.)

After a perfunctory glance at our plans, to our chagrin Ed snorted that our idea was inane, but we decided that he was just jealous of our brilliance.

2. perfunctory (adj.) done without much effort or interest

    Example: Officers made a perfunctory search of the room.

    Example: She gave her mother a perfunctory kiss on the cheek.

    perfunctorily (adv.)

3. snort [snɔrt] (v.) to make a sudden loud noise through your nose, for example because you are angry or laughing

    Example: Angela snorted with laughter.

Tomorrow we are going to start on a computer that will enable us to measure the intelligence of perverse automobile dealers who like to deride the efforts of junior geniuses.

4. perverse (adj.) determined to behave in an unreasonable way, especially by doing the opposite of what is expected or wanted

    Example: It is simply perverse to refuse to perfectly safe treatment.

The Wright brothers didn't become distraught when a skeptic would deride their work.

5. skeptic (n.) someone who has doubts about things that other people think is true or right

    skeptical (adj.) having doubts about something that other people think is true or right

    Example: Harrison approved the plan, but Riley remained skeptical.

    Example: I'm very skeptical about the results of survey.

    skeptically (adv.)

    skepticism  [ˋskɛptəsɪzəm] (n.) doubts that someone has about something that other people think is true or right

    Example: She treated this statement with a healthy degree of skepticism.
